Pablo Gervás (PhD DIC)
I am currently Full Professor (Catedrático de Universidad) on Computational Creativity and Natural Language Processing at the Departamento de Ingeniería del Software e Inteligencia Artificial, Facultad de Informática, Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
I am the director of the NIL research group.
I was the director of the Instituto de Tecnología del Conocimiento from 2009 to 2017.
Over the years, my research interests have shifted towards studying the role of narrative in human communication, with a view to applying it in human-computer interaction. My generic interest in understanding and modelling language still holds. I have the greatest respect for human creativity, and as I labour to understand it, I keep trying to tackle computational models of activities in which it is involved.
I am currently active in the following lines of research:
- Natural language generation: we keep an ongoing research effort both on theoretical issues (surface realization, referring expression generation, lexicalization, aggregation, discourse planning) and applied issues (generating navigational instructions, generating narrative transcription of logs).
- Natural language analysis: efforts include dependency parsing, opinion mining, emotion tagging and text summarization
- NLP for accessibility: we are working on applying natural language processing technologies to improve access to information for people with disabilities of various kinds. This includes text simplification for people with reading difficulties, pictogram to text conversion for user of augmented and adaptative communication systems, and generating of specific verbal instructions for blind people.
- NLP and literary artifacts: ongoing work includes the WASP poetry generation system, narrative composition, annotation of narrative, story generation; earlier efforts included interactive digital storytelling and automatic generation of animated films.
