Javy Forest: application of metaphor and blending in game environments

The Javy Forest project was a billateral integrated action to cover colaboration between research groups at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain and the Universidade de Coimbra in Portugal. It was funded jointly by the Programa de Acciones Integradas de Investigación Científica y Técnica, of the Dirección General de Investigación, Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología, and its Portuguese counterpart. It covered research visits of researchers from each site to the other over a period of two years (2004-2005).

During this time, the main research project carried out was the development of a model for the inclusion of rhetorical figures in automatically generated text, based on computational models of analogy. The text generation component was provided by researchers of the NIL group and the computational model of analogies between domains was provided by researchers from the AI Lab at Coimbra (it had been an important contribution in the PhD thesis of Francisco Câmara Pereira, now published as a book).

The generation of rhetorical figures gave rise to a number of joint research papers, and later became an important part of the PhD thesis of Raquel Hervás.
