Susana Bautista

Susana Bautista Blasco, Ph.D. works as a professor in Computer Science School at Universidad Francisco de Vitoria in Madrid. In addition, she has been nominated vicedean in the School.

She was a Research Associate at the Department of Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence in the Computer Science Faculty of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She is also a member of the Instituto de Tecnología del Conocimiento (Knowledge Techonology Institute).

She developed, as her MsC Thesis project, a module for lexical choice based on emotional content and user model.

She have developed her doctoral Thesis entitled "A Computacional Model for Automatic Simplification of Numerical Expressions". Her supervisors are Dr. Pablo Gervás and Dr. Raquel Hervás.

The PhD focuses on text simplification, restricted to numerical expressions. It provides evidence for the strong need for concepts, methods and tools for supporting users in the information society in accesing information in accessible manner including numerical expressions.

Her main research interests are Natural Language Processing for Accessibility, Augmentative and Alternative Comunications Systems (AACS) and user centered system design (UCD) . We are working on applying NLP technologies to improve access to information for people with disabilities of varios kinds. This includes text simplification for people with reading difficulties, pictograms to text conversion for user or AACS and study of user modeling.

She has been at The Open University, in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom, in 2010, like visiting member during four mounths. She has worked in the Natural Language Generation (NLG) research group with Dr. Sandra Williams. Her work focus on automatic simplification of numerical expressions in English text. (Generating intelligent descriptions of numerical quantities for people with different levels of numeracy).

During four mounths, in 2012, she has been at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, in Barcelona, Spain, like visiting research in the TALN group with Dr. Horacio Saggion. Her work focus on automatic simplification of numerical expressions in Spanish text in the framework of the Simplext proyect.

From June of 2015 until December of 2015 she had a Post Doctoral Position at the Institute of Informatics of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil. She participated in the project "SAMSUNG: Text Simplification of Complex Expressions" coordinated by Dr. Aline Villaviencio .

From January of 2016 until December of 2017 she had a Post Doctoral Position at the GRASIA Research Group of UCM, Madrid. She participated in the European H2020 project FoTRRIS , Fostering a Transition Towards Responsible Research and Innovation Systems (grant agreement no 665906).
